Movie Review on '9'

By 9/24/2009

I went to watch the movie '9' with Sing and some other folks in the meet up group via www.meetup.com last Sunday.

'9' is a computer animated film produced by Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch), directed by former WETA Digital artist Shane Acker, and featuring the music of Danny Elfman. It is based on Acker’s Academy Award-nominated 2005 film festival short film, which you can watch below.

The film is basically about a post-apocolyptic world where humans are totally destroyed by machines and vice versa. It starts off with 9 waking up to this world full of destruction and he is clueless about the world until he meets a fellow doll/ robot. It is by chance that he finds a small community of others like him who are hunted down by fearsome machines that are hell bent on trying to destroy them.

The movie then shows 9 rallying up the rest to find out the source of the machines and why they want total destruction of 9 and friends.

Sing totally raved about the movie and kept saying how great it is. I, on the other hand, felt that it was an okay movie with fantastic animation, really cute characters and somewhat interesting plot. That being said, I felt that the plot was too limp for a full length movie and would've been better just as a short film.

Nonetheless, there are interesting themes to explore like the fact that the 9 little bots are actually fragments of their creator's soul and therefore, each bot has a separate character from their creator.

I guess this film is an either or - you either love it or have no feelings whatsoever. It is DEFINITELY not an animation for children. They probably have NO clue what the whole thing is about and wouldn't be entertained at all.
